The Distribution Centre
The page focuses on the requirements of a food
distribution centre, following the various stages in the logistical
process. Vanriet has developed technical solutions to automate most of
the functional stages in the distribution centre. Goods are delivered
packed in crates or boxes often on a product carrier such as a pallet
dolly or roll cage and have to be unloaded. Having unloaded the goods
the next stage may include sortation and distribution within the centre
prior to despatch. The final stage involves loading goods for despatch
and transfer to the end user.
Developments
The ongoing standardisation of product packaging and
carriers enables automation of the various components within the
logistical process increasingly possible and financially attractive. For
example fruit and vegetables can be handled automatically and with a
high capacity.
Order picking of beer / soft drinks crates with a capacity of 1200-1500
crates per hour is already possible. In addition to this form of
handling, more crossdocking will be carried out in future. With this
process incoming goods are no longer stored but immediately
redistributed for despatch.
